O.U.S.D. Grading Policy

A letter grade of A equals 4.0 grade points, a B equals 3.0 grade points, a C equals 2.0 grade points, a D equals 1.0 grade points and an F equals 0 grade points.

Within the Oakland Unified School District, no weight is given to pluses or minuses after the letter grade. For example, a B is equal to a B-, and a B- is equal to a B+ in terms of grade point. For the B-, B and B+, therefore, the grade point is 3.0 for each. This rule of course applies to the other letter grades. This policy is different as compared to many universities.

You are of course free to list your letter grade with a plus or minus as appropriate, but remember that the calculator will calculate the grade point as described above.

Using the Calculator

  1. Enter the letter grade for each course that you would like to include in your grade point average. If you like, you may enter the name of the course, but this is optional. Note that if you do enter the name of the course, then when or if you decide to print the page from your browser, the name of the course will be listed for easier reference. The number of units should always equal one. If you don't enter the number of units, don't worry because the calculator will automatically enter the value for you. Note that if you enter a unit value different than one, the calculator will automatically adjust the value to one.
  2. After the letter grade for each course is entered, the calculator will automatically compute the grade point. You are free to reset and reenter the grade for each course.
  3. Once all of your desired courses have been entered, "press" the compute button at the bottom of calculator. Your grade point average will then be computed. After your computation is complete, you are free to "experiment" with your grade point average by resetting and reentering.
  4. If you would like to keep a copy of your GPA calculation, then print the page from your browser. The entire calculator including the entries and calculations will then be printed. Though entering the name for each course is optional, you may want to enter the course name if you plan to print your GPA calculation.
